As with other healthcare fields, this career is notably among those that are in demand and is expected to have favorable job outlook in the next few years. Ultrasound technicians are specialists in harnessing the power of sound waves in order to take internal images of the different parts of the patients body.

An ultrasound machine makes this possible, and whatever images captured during the procedure are sent to doctors in order to be analyzed and be used as data for making correct diagnosis. The ultrasound tech must have the knowledge and skills in order to operate the ultrasound machine properly and guide patients in making the imaging process safe and successful at the same time. It is up to the ultrasound technician to make sure that patients have a good understanding of the procedure that they will be undergoing. Recording of the patients medical history may also be needed in some situations.

The training that he has undergone allows him to exactly pinpoint the correct configuration of the ultrasound machine and the proper positioning of the patient in order to get the best quality images possible.

Before the scanning procedure is performed, a special type of gel is applied onto the skin to ensure that sound waves can be transmitted more efficiently into the body. A transducer is utilized by the ultrasound technician to transmit sound waves which in turn will help produce the images on the screen. As the scanning progresses, the ultrasound tech must be able to know what to look for and be able to select only the images that will be useful for doctors.

Besides taking images, he will also take measurements, make calculations, and evaluate the results that the doctors come up with in their preliminary findings. When ultrasound equipment is not being used, he may also be responsible for its maintenance to ensure that it is always in good working condition. In order to be a competent and proficient ultrasound technician, one will have to undergo a formal training program. The most common route to this career is a 2-year Associates Degree program, although a more comprehensive 4-year Bachelors Degree training can yield better results.

No less than one third of new car purchasers in America regarded fuel economy an important factor.. Back in 1992 already General Motors built a vehicle that got 100 miles to the gallon – and all these years later one of people’s major concerns on top of global warming and pollution is dependence on foreign oil. Another vehicle, the GM TPC, which looked a lot like the Geo Metro, weighed only 1000 pounds and could get 75 miles per gallon. Unfortunately, in order to meet American safety regulations, the 3-cylinder vehicle required reinforcement weighing 200 pounds, which led to further development being discarded.

It’s quite shocking that this was not the only GM prototype that was built, only to be thrown out later. Some of these were the 1982 GM Lean Machine which did 80 miles per gallon, and the GM Ultralite which did 100 mpg. As soon as Honda in 1992 attained 50 mpg with the Civic VX, GM was promoting cars that got 20 mpg, while in the background they had vehicles capable of 100 mpg. If cars that were capable of doing 100 miles per gallon had already been developed way back then, why is it that such cars are not being sold today?

It is just a weird phenomenon that some companies promote traditional vehicles in the US, but sell different, more efficient cars in other countries. Consumers in Japan and Europe have for quite some time now managed to get cars that do 70 miles per gallon and more. A case in point of a car / truck never marketed inside the US and capable of 78 mpg, is the Lupo by Volkswagen. A car known as the Jazz elsewhere in the world was introduced to the States in 2007 as the Fit. You can get economy-boosting features with the Jazz in Japan, say for example a smaller engine and other ways to reduce consumption, but not so with the Fit in the US.

In The United States the manufacturers point out they have to build big cars simply because that is what the American public wants. Building a small commuter type vehicle doesn’t make the manfacturer big money, unlike with a large SUV. A Tank on Wheels is the thing to have – that’s the message that the commercials beguile the American public with. Fuel-saving choices from the large companies are uncommon, so it’s pretty easy to deduce where their motivations lay. Instead of being synonymous with SUVs, GM today could have been known as a leader in fuel-economic vehicles. Many other manufacturers have also developed fuel-efficient cars, but they’ve all done the same as GM by not offering them to Americans.

Even with climate change and the incredible pollution of the world environment, US car makers have yet to act in response positively and at least give Americans the option of a fuel-efficient car. The question comes up: how many Americans would’ve been thankful for the option of acquiring a car with good gas mileage but weren’t ever offered it? Maybe the instant has come to restart building those cars that were developed only to be abandoned all those years ago.
